Food rationing was the rule in France from 1940 onwards, in response to the shortages associated with the Second World War and the German occupation. The label on this box reminds us that “This product is sold in exchange for coupons or tickets designated monthly by the Ministry of Supply”. The number of tickets allocated to each consumer depended on age, type of activity, state of health and place of residence.  This rationing system remained in force until the end of 1949 for certain products such as sugar and coffee.
