This engraving appeared several times in Johannes Stumpf's 'Chronicle of the States of the Swiss Confederation'. In particular, it depicts a hailstorm that hit Switzerland in 1437 and a similar event that occurred near Baden in Germany in 1544. The scene clearly depicts hailstones falling on a starving population, emphasising the dramatic impact of such natural disasters.
