This mould encourages a maturing watermelon to grow into the shape of a cube. The two parts are riveted together around the edge to ensure they sustain the pressure of the watermelon as it expands.
Throughout history, market gardening has been in constant development. The ancient ornamental garden evolved into the medieval vegetable plot established in the former marsh areas of Paris during the Enlightenment. In the 19th century, scientific innovations improved techniques and tools which paved the way for intensive cultivation. A desire to return to extensive organic cultivation emerged towards the end of the 20th century.
Market gardening comprises a whole repertoire of methods and tools selected according to the crops being grown and their cycle. Each tool enables a particular task to be carried out more accurately, more easily and more profitably. With the arrival of industrial cultivation, mechanical techniques and the use of multi-purpose machines have gradually replaced manual techniques.
