Waffle iron

Modern Era, Europe
AL3614

This waffle iron, shaped like tongs, was used to cook bricelets (thin wafers) directly in fire embers. The long handle prevented the cook from getting burnt. The first written documentation of such a utensil dates back to 1552, in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland.
