Sugar tongs, G. W. Adams

Modern Era, Europe

These sugar tongs perfectly illustrate the abundance of utensils found on bourgeoisie tables in the 19th century. Eleven years before these tongs were made, Czech confectioner Jacob Kristof Rad produced the first sugar cubes. Until then, sugar had been sold in conical form, known as a sugar loaf.
