"Fresh Food Runner" is a learning game for children aged 8 and over that imparts basic information about when certain types of fruit and vegetables are harvested in Switzerland.
The game has the following learning objectives:
- Discover that every type of fruit and vegetable is harvested at a specific time of year.
- Ascertain which local fruit and vegetables are available fresh and in season during which months of the year.
Why is this important?
Freshly picked fruit and vegetables not only taste better, but have a particularly high vitamin and nutrient content. Knowing this can play a role in us choosing a healthier, more environmentally conscious diet.
Don't children already know this?
That is something we can no longer take for granted. Nowadays, in urban localities in particular, there is often a lack of knowledge about agriculture. Supermarkets also sell many kinds of fruit and vegetables out of season, in which case they have been grown in heated greenhouses or transported long distances. Some of them can also survive long periods of storage. However, fresh products that are in season are normally better in terms of their quality and environmental footprint.
